This very cold winter will make spring, when it finally arrives, even sweeter! However, there is an upside to all this cold weather; Stink bugs are bugging out! According to a study done by Virginia Tech, the stink bugs, which come mostly from China and are aptly named for the foul odor they give off when squashed, can’t take the extreme cold. If you haven’t yet made the acquaintance of these pesky pests consider yourself lucky.
Emerging wireless technologies are now trending in the heating and cooling industry and I think you are going to enjoy some of the applications available to you. Did you know that you can now set, adjust and monitor the temperature in your home through a thermostat that communicates with your smart device (phone or tablet)? Once the thermostat is installed, an app can be downloaded onto your smart device that will allow two-way communication between your home thermostat and the device running the application. Not only will you be able to control your home environment from your smart device, but the thermostat will alert you (via the app) if:
- The temperature in your home drops or rises above levels you have set
- The filter becomes dirty
- The system detects any error codes within your heating and cooling system
Some of the more versatile wireless systems also have the ability to connect and monitor other appliances such as a sump pump, which, if it were to malfunction, could cause your basement to flood. Your thermostat can immediately make you aware of the problem, taking the guess work out of the equation, and often preventing a worst case scenario. How often we may catch our selves wishing for the “good old days” when things seemed simpler… well, there are tangible perks to applying new technologies- they are becoming simpler to operate and can save you money!
